The Benefits of Good Posture

Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Dr. Paul Drew

Eric Michaels: So why the book?

Dr. Drew: To help reverse the trend of bad posture that seems to be fashionable amongst today’s young women.  I want to bring back the glory days of Hollywood, when actors were “Glamourous” on the red carpet.  I want to not only help people look thinner and feel healthier, but to also display better self confidence.  Since I’m a doctor of physical therapy that has worked with many celebrities in helping them to feel and look good, I wanted to share my advice for all to obtain that same great look and feel that celebs have on the red carpet.

Eric Michaels: What are the benefits of good posture?

Dr. Drew: It’s not only good for the health of your spine and body, but also helps to display greater self confidence that others around you will take notice and you will be respected.  Better posture gives you a thinner look, without having to go on any fad diet.

Eric Michaels: What are some causes of poor posture?
Dr. Drew: Stress is usually the number one reason, as we go thru our busy day stuck in an office chair, behind a computer or the wheel of our car, we forget about our posture, and we tend to slump forward.  Also, many people don’t realize that their posture is poor.  They have never been taught or told that they need to stand or sit up straight.  I remember visiting my father years ago, he is a World War 2 veteran, and he was all slumped over, and I told him to stand up straight.  He said he was standing straight, he didn’t realize that his posture was bad.  He actually did exercises from my book and in a month, he was back upright again.  So it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can still improve your posture. Unfortunately, another reason has been that “slouchy” has become a fashion trend displayed by many young girls who are looking at young starlets on the red carpet to not only see the fashions that are being worn, but how they are displaying themselves which is often very poor posture.  A great dress can make you look better, but poor posture can make a good dress look bad.

Dr. Paul Drew also answers and discusses:

  • So with the idea of celebrities setting an example on the red carpet, who do you think are good examples of “Red Carpet Posture” and who would you say could benefit from your book or expertise?
  • How can one get better posture, and obtain your book, and I see you also have clothing that helps with posture?
  • What kind of advice can you give our listeners today to help them get started on looking and feeling more “Glamourous”?

jenny_skoog_portrait.jpg

Note: Refer to audio player below to listen to this episode!

Skoog_Fit_Logoresize.jpg

Jenny Skoog has been in the fitness world since 2004 and practices what she preaches. Her move into fitness as a career came from her sheer enjoyment of working out, changing her own body and boosting her own fitness level. She turned her hobby into a career, which makes training with her a truly fantastic experience. She loves what she does.  Chances are, she’s been where you are.

Muay Thai kickboxing, distance running, resistance training, Pilates and yoga are all passions of Jenny’s.  She’ll work your passion into a workout regime to make sure you stick to it.  Jenny provides a very personalized service to her clients:  She checks in with them to make sure they’re on point.  Her clients’ success is her success too.  She likes to create goals with her clients as a team and to keep them accountable until they’ve attained it.  She knows that to achieve a successful level of fitness, dedication has to go both ways.  Jenny knows overall fitness goes beyond the gym, beyond sweating, and beyond calorie burning:  It’s a state of mind.

Jenny is certified with National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), Interactive Fitness Trainers of America (IFTA), Pre/Postnatal with Annette Lang, Kettlebells with RKC, is a certified Spinning Instructor with Schwinn, and has completed courses on Special Populations, Integrative Flexibility & Self-Myofascial Release.

Jenny Skoog discusses & answers the following:

  • Losing weight seems daunting.  It's time-consuming and overwhelming. Where does one begin?
  • Everyone knows a whole pizza-pie would affect his or her midsection, but will just a slice of pizza really affect his or her weight?
  • People think of a million excuses why they might not exercise:  “I’m too busy”, “running hurts my knees”, “the weather is too bad”, or “I have a bad back”.  What should people do to stay motivated?
  • Does juice cleanse like the lemonade diet and other crash diets work?
  • What about people who have had a bad day (or week) and or are feeling fat and in a low place, what should they do?

Workouts that best assist in weight loss and management

AndiaWinslowWebPic.jpg

Andia Winslow - a Professional Golfer, Certified Fitness Professional and an elite athlete who trains with USA Track & Field joins the show. As an ambassador for the Women’s Sports Foundation, she is committed to work that encourages youth and adults to maintain healthy and active lifestyles.

Note: Refer to audio player below to listen to this episode!

As a child, Andia Winslow dreamt of taking to the skies to continue the legacy established by her late grandfather Colonel Robert V. Winslow, a Tuskegee Airman and proud US Air Force serviceman. Although, as a young adult, she set her sights instead on a career as a professional golfer, she was proud to accept her grandfather’s Congressional Gold Medal of Honor on behalf of her family. This commitment to service and leadership has been the undercurrent in all of her ventures since childhood.

A noted junior golf career began at the age of 11 in Seattle, Washington at Jefferson Park Golf Course – known fondly as the “home” of Fred Couples, PGA Tour Professional. Though actively recruited by more than twenty-five colleges and universities as a top 75 world ranked junior golfer, Andia chose to travel across the country to attend Yale University, an institution known famously for its academic rigor. As a college freshman, and the first African American woman to compete in the Ivy League, she helped the Bulldogs secure the storied Ivy League Championship Title.

While at Yale, her interest in historical and ethnographic research culminated in the receipt of three undergraduate research grants. The first, an international travel fellowship, allowed her study in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to examine the effects of globalization on artistic traditions. The second, a Mellon Undergraduate Research Grant, facilitated the completion of her Sociology Senior Thesis in 2004. An interdisciplinary focus in Film Studies and a Fine Arts grant recognized her efforts as a documentary filmmaker. Her first film was selected for official inclusion in ten international film festivals as well as special presentations at higher education conferences and major research universities.

Although an intellect and an artist, Andia is perhaps best known for her passion and pure athleticism. She hails from a family of athletes that includes current and former NFL players, a professional basketball player and martial artists. She is a formidable on-course competitor -who trained for a time with USA Track & Field- and serves as a professional athlete ambassador for the Women’s Sports Foundation and the LPGA/USGA Girls’ Golf Program. In April 2006, she became only the fourth African American to ever compete in a Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour event.  An elite Certified Fitness Professional and wellness advocate, Andia believes that “the best experiences are those that are shared.” Via her fitness company, ADUB365 FIT, she conducts clinics and speaks around the country promoting healthy lifestyles and physical activity for youth and adults.

250sq_edrugstore.jpg

Andia Winslow discusses & answers the following:

  • How do you first address clients who come to you with weight concerns? How do you help them plan to get on track?
  • What is the most immediate action that folks can take?
  • What types of diets do you recommend to your active clients who are looking for moderate weight loss and maintanence?
  • What are the workouts that best assist in weight loss and management?
  • How long does it typically take for people to see sustainable change in their bodies? How much and how long should they workout?
  • Special Tip in Conclusion
