Key areas of focus in being healthy with Andrew Johnston

FullBodyLegsBike.jpg

Andrew Johnston, Author of Holistic Strength Training for Triathlon, & former professional cyclist, the first leukemia survivor to qualify for and finish the Hawaii Ironman World Championships, and twice voted One of the Top Trainers in America by Men's Health joins the show.

Note: Refer to audio player below to listen to this episode!

A native of Atlanta, Andrew Johnston has been personal training for over 15 years. He got into the business for self-improvement, arming himself with knowledge to combat the performance enhancing drugs that inundate the sport of professional cycling. This strategy worked, and in 1992 he was invited to be a resident athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Upon graduation from Eckerd College in 1994, he turned pro and took his ambitions to Europe to race for the Belgian Haverbeke GB team. After the 1996 Olympic Trials, he moved to Spain to race for the Palafrugell and Homs squads until 1998. Andrew devoted his full attention to personal training in 1999 after a crash ended his cycling career just as he was entering his prime. But his competitive juices were quenched for only a year before he discovered an interest in triathlon. In his first full season of triathlon competition, he was the 2001 Olympic Distance Champion of Georgia and 5th overall at the National Long Course Triathlon Championships, earning All-American status as well as a slot on the U.S. World Triathlon team.

Andrew founded Triumph Training in 2000, turning his athletic experience and insatiable appetite for knowledge into a successful training business. Not content with having obtained his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist degree, arguably the most respected credential in the fitness industry, Andrew became the first Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiologists in the state of Georgia in 2001. His passion for the body and its limitless potential has since grown only stronger with Men's Journal naming him one of the Best Trainers in the U.S. in 2005 and again in 2006. Perfecting what he preaches to his clientele as well as various audiences throughout the Southeast, in 2006 Andrew became the first Leukemia Survivor to qualify for and finish the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. The award-winning documentary Living is Winning captures the events leading up to that race and takes the audience deep into the life of an aspiring triathlete. Now he takes his knowledge as a Holistic Lifestyle Coach and CHEK practitioner to guide people in their pursuit of wellness, ultimately helping them to realize that the only limitations they truly have are the ones they set for themselves.

Sport Clips - Massaging the Scalp with Julie Vargas

SportClipsJulieVargas.jpg

Julie Vargas, a licensed stylist and director of Career Opportunities for Sport Clips, the nation's largest men's and boy's hair care provider joined the show. She has been in the hair care industry for 20 years working daily with leading cosmetology educators, product representatives and professional stylists.

Note: Refer to audio player below to listen to this episode!

250sq_edrugstore.jpg

Julie Vargas discusses & answers the following:

  • What do men need to do to keep a healthy look?

Hair tends to grow about a half inch per month, so Sport Clips recommends a hair cut about every three to four weeks, depending upon the style you choose.

  • Do you recommend trims in between haircuts or does once-and-done every few weeks cut it for guys?

At Sport Clips we focus on men's haircare, and they tend to see growth around the neckline in-between cuts.  We offer free neck trims to keep the look tidy, especially if you're in the working world and want to maintain a polished image.  For younger guys and those in more creative professions, a little shaggier look is common, so the neck trim is not as critical.

  • Are there special shampoos or tactics that really seem to work to make your hair look and feel healthier?

Anytime you use a professional product you are using a product that is better for your hair than a store bought product with a high alcohol content.  We uses products that contain Tea Tree Oil and there are many positives associated with that ingredient, it definitely tingles the scalp.  Also, we offer something called an MVP Experience, it's a steamed towel, neck and shoulder massage -- something that offers guys a stress reducer when they're in for a haircut, adding to their overall relaxation and well-being.

  • What about massaging the scalp...does that stimulate hair growth?  Can it prevent baldness?

It can help to stimulate growth and blood circulation…maybe prevent the quantity of hair loss.

  • About balding...do the shampoos and treatments that are out there really work?

Sure they do…however, the real key is to catch it before it happens so that it becomes a preventative process verses a recovery process which very seldom has a high success rate.
