It Just Hasn’t Happened Yet with Dr. Karin Anderson

karinAnderson.jpg

Associate Professor of Psychology and Counselor Education at Concordia University Chicago & author of the book "It Just Hasn’t Happened Yet" - Dr. Karin Anderson joins the show.

Note: Refer to audio player below to listen to this episode!

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Karin Anderson is currently an associate professor of Psychology and Counselor Education at Concordia University Chicago.  She received her doctorate in developmental psychology from Northern Illinois University and has delivered a number of well-received presentations at national and international psychology conferences, covering issues such as identity development and family dynamics.

She first became interested in the psychology of women when she began to examine the complex emotions involved in her own engagement to be married.  As she questioned her motivations for marriage, she pondered women’s roles and options in the post-feminism era.  How much had really changed?  After months of internal conflict, she ended up calling off her wedding two months before it was to occur.

Back “out there” in the dating scene, she became keenly aware of the messages directed toward single women—messages that appeared disparaging and illogical, yet hailed from reliable sources such as the local bookstore’s self-help section.  Drawing on the data of other academic researchers and firsthand accounts of the many women she interviewed personally,  Anderson wrote It Just Hasn’t Happened Yet as an effort to provide a logical counter-message of encouragement.

A compelling teacher and speaker, Anderson speaks to groups on women’s issues, single adulthood, developmental psychology, and family relationships.  For more information, visit AuthenticallyMe.com.

Do Your Large Breasts Make Your Back Sore?

rebeccapic.jpg

Rebecca Savich, Inventor and President of Contour Table Systems, who has created an innovative new massage table designed to support women’s breasts and people of all body, shapes and sizes.

Note: Refer to audio player below to listen to this episode.

contour-Logo1.jpg

After a 3 day cross country drive from Los Angeles to Pennsylvania, Rebecca Savich spent 5 days trying to get in touch with Jeff Riach, President of Oakworks, (a leading Manufacturer and Retailer of massage tables).  “I drove to Pennsylvania without an appointment but figured when I did get a hold of him, I wanted to be there and ready.”  When Rebecca finally spoke to Jeff, he invited her to come in for a meeting the next day.  He was going to give her 15 minutes.  The 15 minutes turned into 2½ hours, they shook hands that day and “The Utopian” and “The Euphorian” began to take form.

Rebecca’s company, Contour Table Systems signed a deal with Oakworks, Inc. in August 2009. “Although I have lived in Los Angeles for many years, I am proud to have been born and raised in Pennsylvania. I love that Oakworks is based in Pennsylvania and that their products are manufactured in the USA.  For me, it’s like paying homage to my home state. The fact that they are a family-owned business with incredible ‘green’ values, made them the right choice for me.”

As a naturally endowed woman, Rebecca faced major discomfort when lying face down getting a massage. “It’s a Catch-22 situation.  I received massages often because my back aches from carrying my breasts, but the massages that were meant to help my back, would hurt my breasts!” Her own “breast distress” turned into a personal quest to invent a device that could be built into massage and medical tables. The ABC System (Adjustable Breast Comfort system, patent pending) was born.

It has been an amazing journey for Rebecca to finalize the deal. Her story is riddled with obstacles, determination and many ups and downs. “I owe a great bit of gratitude to my friends and family who supported me through this. But most of all, she dedicates her project and success to her mom. “Without her, I would not have been able to do this,” she says of her mom Sandra K. Savich (1948- 2005) in whose honor Rebecca has set up the Sandra K. Savich Foundation. Contour Table Systems is dedicated to donating a portion of its proceeds to various charities through her foundation.

A bit of a renaissance woman herself, Rebecca graduated from the Art Institute of Philadelphia where she majored in music marketing, media and project management. She created and wrote “The Adventure Brigade,”’ an online children’s animation program in development. She is an award-winning photographer, a certified scuba diver and has been a member of Screen Actors Guild since 1996. For more information visit ContourTableSystems.com.

Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Rebecca Savich

Eric Michaels: What prompted you to invent a device for massage and medical tables that adjusts for different breast sizes?

Rebecca Savich: I am a naturally large breasted woman. When you carry that kind of weight, you need to get massages because your back is always sore. I had tried many different masseuses, many different places and tables and it was pretty much the same thing - they would roll up towels, put them under your shoulders and the pressure that they would apply to help my back was actually making my breasts sore which was counter productive...

Eric Michaels: Tell us about your ABC System. Other than adjust ability for breast comfort, can the Contour Table Systems platform perform other functions?

Rebecca Savich: Well the ABC System itself is a cushioned platform that moves up and down throughout the table. The whole top is a cut out and it moves so that's where the adjustability comes from but the great thing about this is, that it does actually have other functions, whereas it raises above the table - so when the client is laying on their back it can actually use it as a head rest so the therapist doesn't have to hold up the back of the neck...

Eric Michaels: Please tell our audience about how your tables work and who would most benefit from them.

Rebecca Savich: The first table that came out last year is called the "Utopian". It's a portable version and with this table it is simply, the platform itself is raised up and down with an airbag that is used with a quick pedal so it just puts air into the air bladder and it makes it go up and it has a simple release valve that allows the air to go out so it can lower and it's light weight...it benefits everybody - men and women....

Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Bobbi Palmer

Eric Michaels: Your company is called Date Like a Grownup. How would you define dating like a grownup?

Bobbi Palmer: Dating like a grown up has a few elements. It is having confidence and trust in yourself. Having awareness of what you bring to a relationship  and knowing that you are enough; also having an awareness of where you might be able to improve yourself to get what you're looking for -- in a mate and in a lifestyle with that mate. Trusting your judgment, making good choices, knowing what you want and focusing on finding a man who will add that to your life. Being realistic and not expecting or waiting for that perfect man. It's looking for a good man; a man who makes you happy and wants to share a great life with you. It is also a balance between your heart and head. Get past the emotions, manage the rejection…grab that grownup girl and make sure you include her in your decisions. Confidence, good choices, balance head and heart = dating like a grownup and with grace – make it look effortless and elegant…you're not trying so hard and you're being yourself.

Eric Michaels: What do you find to be the biggest obstacles for women when they’re dating?

Bobbi Palmer: From my experience it is self esteem. I work with women in their 40s all the way to 70s – it's surprising how many women still judge themselves based on their experiences from long ago. They don't know how fabulous they are! When I coach my 1st step is "Who Am I? Falling in Love With Myself." I help my clients take a fresh look at themselves and begin to see the truth about who they are. It's often eye-opening and life-changing. They think they know what men want …based on when they were 30, mature men – men of life experiences, aren't those guys anymore. Beliefs based on decisions and experiences when they were 18 or 25.  This creates obstacles and patterns they don’t even see that stand in the way. Beliefs: All men are jerks, liars, superficial – they aren't. I have to have a man who is at least 3 inches taller. I refuse to date a man who doesn’t get along with his Mother..ect.

Eric Michaels: Is there something you recommend women do to prepare for dating?

Bobbi Palmer: My First commandment: Know and love thyself - self esteem and awareness. Know what you want in a man and a relationship. Be sure to get past your laundry list of adjectives and dig deep. Know your audience. Understand and appreciate men. Know how to communicate based on our differences...

Part of Interview with Louisa Maccan-Graves

Eric Michaels: Many of us become overwhelmed or even a little "blue" during the busy holiday season. Is there anything healthy we can do to naturally uplift our mood, increase our energy, help our skin look younger, and help us feel our best during the holidays?

Louisa Maccan-Graves: Absolutely! This is the time of year where people do feel a little blue & overwhelmed with shopping, commitments and parties and they are not quite feeling themselves. One of the greatest ones I recommend to people are Omega III Fatty Acid - those are the ones you find in fish oils...that help naturally uplift the mood, naturally balance hormones, support vascular health, ignite fat-burning and help turn back the clock...

Visit HollywoodBeautySecrets.com for more tips and information on these and other safe supplements are noted in my 30-page Ebook "Look & Feel Your Best on Any Budget: Empowering Beauty & Age-proofing tips for Women of all Ages."

Eric Michaels: What is an effective rejuvenating skin care regimen for the winter season?

Louisa Maccan-Graves: I've mentioned many great skin care protocols because people have different skin types and issues and one of the most common ones that works for most people is the one I suggest for sensitive, mature dry skin or women that are going through menopause or allergy issues can use this regimen. Winter season dries the skin as we know & so does the sun if you are in a sunny climate so what is important is to keep the skin hydrated. So for all skin types what I recommend is to try to use a cleanser that is soap free. You can pick up cleansers at the drug store...

Eric Michaels: Got any NEW cutting edge "anti-aging" products at "budget-friendly" prices you can suggest?

Louisa Maccan-Graves: EGF is the new "buzz" in the skin care world. Most skin doctors don't even know about it. But it's been used in the past on diabetic skin to speed heal wounds. And what was discovered is that it can helps reverse aging skin...

Don’t Panic If You Are Still Single

every-single-thing-that-s-wrong-with-you-q-a-with-karin-anderson-18150629.jpg

Dr. Karin Anderson joins eHealth Radio to talk about being a single woman.

Note: Refer to audio player and links below to listen to this show.

As an associate professor of psychology and counselor education at Concordia University Chicago, Dr. Karin Anderson has a doctorate in developmental psychology, a track record of well-received presentations at national and international psychology conferences, and a speaking platform focusing on women’s identity construction and cultivation. Despite these credentials, she’s no stuffy academic peering down from the Ivory Tower. In fact, the inspiration for her writing derives from the ebb and flow of her personal relationships—not the data garnered from professional research. Yet it’s precisely this fusion of academic chops and “girl about town” experience that perfectly positions her to tackle themes of relationships and single adulthood. Readers perceive her as “one of them,” connecting with her accessible and engaging voice. Yet as an academic, she provides a measure of objectivity and authority that enlightens, encourages, and empowers. Her first book, It Just Hasn’t Happened Yet presents a new angle sorely needed in the relationship genre―one that counteracts the messages single women frequently field, such as “You’re too picky!”, “You’re too needy!”, or “You’re too neurotic, which is why you aren’t married.” It Just Hasn’t Happened Yet encourages women to stay true to themselves, instead of changing just to “snag a man.” It asserts that single women are smart, sexy, cream-of-the-crop “catches” who will eventually be “caught” ―it just hasn’t happened yet.

250sq_edrugstore.jpg

Partial Transcript of Interview with Dr. Karin Anderson

Eric Michaels: I understand the writing of your book was directly from real life experiences through personal relationships - was there one event that inspired this book to become a reality?

Dr. Karin: I think it was actually a combination of a lot of experiences but in thinking that over there was probably that one moment that cystalized for me the need for a book like this. I have had a lot of interviews with women who are single and struggling with identity issues. About two years ago, I was in a local bookstore looking and seeing that in the psychology section overall was seeing the message that a single woman - if she hasn't been married yet - has some what of a flaw that she has yet to overcome. Books like "10 Things You Need to do to bring in Mr. Right" and these sorts of things and I thought to myself - wait a minute - I know a lot of single women and I know a lot of married women and everyone is flawed in their own way. To suggest that there is just that one thing you need to do, or get over or work it through and then you will be fit or prepared for marriage I thought - A. WRONG B. Disempowering for women and C. We need a counter message available!

Eric Michaels: What are the common struggles that most single women have from your perspective?

Dr. Karin: I think the struggle that most single women have in our society today really relate to what I just said basically we get told that there is something wrong with us and it is rwally interesting if you look at the socialogical trend over the last fifty to sixty years where we went through a strong womens movement which was to provide women with more options and more opportunities for women to be who they are supposed to be and so women today do have opportuntities and options that weren't available to our mothers and certainly our grandmothers. These opportunities are wonderful and at the same time we haven't loosened the expectation in terms of womens relationship. Women are still viewed as - it's great if she has a career, it's great if she has accomplishments etc. but if she is still single after a certain age we are suspect! What's going on here? What's the problem there? That seems to be the most important factor of a woman and her person and how she is judged.

Eric Michaels: Would you have any advice for a single mom desiring to date again?

Dr. Karin: I do think that single mothers have an additional challenge ahead of them as they look for love and partnership. It would just depend on the type of men that they are surrounding themselves with. Some men are absolutely not interested in fathering someone elses child but I would say that most men in their 30's and 40's who have had similar life experiences and several relationships under their belt, I think most men are open to finding the right woman and if their is a child involved then they will start to negotiate through that and weed their way through that experience. I don't know that I have any specific advice for single moms that is any different than I have for other women who are at a certain age and feeling the pressures or the desire to couple up. I think the advice that is typically given is usually off the mark. Usually I suggest that the woman needs to change herself in some way as I eluded to earlier....

The Coolest Way to Flirt - EVER!

_LOV1777.jpg

RACHEL DeAlto Founder, FlipMe! Cards

joins eHealth Radio

A graduate of Syracuse University with a B.S. in Advertising from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Rachel DeAlto planned and purchased media for various regional and national clients before deciding to go to law school. She received her Juris Doctorate at Seton Hall University School of Law in Newark, NJ. After passing the New Jersey Bar, Rachel joined a law firm in Central New Jersey specializing in civil litigation.

During law school, Rachel caught the eye of a curious guy (her future husband John) across the dining room while having lunch with her parents at a local restaurant. With intentions of not disrespecting Rachel’s parents, John left a note with the waitress along with his phone number and asked her to slip Rachel the note after he left. Three days later, Rachel dialed into her fate. Six weeks later, they were engaged to be married. Having met through their own “flip experience,” Rachel and John are excited to give others the opportunity to be ready the next time someone catches their eye. After several years as a trial attorney, Rachel unexpectedly found herself literally face to face with her first entrepreneurial venture.  The unique way in which John and Rachel met reinstated the importance of the initial face to face chemistry needed for the perfect dating formula. Combining initial chemistry with personalized and private dating cards, Rachel has boxed the perfect dating formula with the creation of FlipMe cards.

In June 2010, John and Rachel launched FlipMe cards, a new dating retail product with an online component which gives singles the chance to make connections they might otherwise miss and puts fate back in the hands of the desired. It’s as simple as looking, liking and flipping. Rachel resides with her husband, John, and children in New Jersey.

Partial Transcript of Interview with Rachel DeAlto of FlipMeDating.com

Eric Michaels: In regards to dating and ways to meet new people - this is a very cool & clever approach! Why did Rachel DeAlto create FlipMe?

Rachel DeAlto: It's funny because it actually started the way I met my husband. We were at a restaurant, I was having lunch with my parents and he was sitting next to me at a table near his collegues and he kept giving my eye contact. In a normal world, everyone would leave and would have missed an opportunity instead my husband actually ripped of a piece of the place mat and passed a note to me through the waitress. Two years after that, we have been married for five years now, we were sitting around just thinking what if we created a way where other people could avoid those missed opportunities and meet people in daily life that they are making that eye contact with and could have a really good chemistry with without having to put themselves too far out there and have to approach somebody by going up and asking for a phone number or something of that sort - so that's what led to the creation of Flipme!

Eric Michaels: So....tell us how does Flipme.com work?

Rachel DeAlto: It actually is very simple. The member receives a pack of 30 cards, they activate their card and they can pass them out to anyone they see in daily life that they're attracted to. You could pass the card out to a woman on the subway, in a coffee shop - each card has a flirty phrase and it has unique codes on it that links her to you and only the two of you are allowed to communicate on the web site. So bascially it is just a way to communicate with people in every day life without giving too much personal information.

Eric Michaels: How is FlipMe different than other online dating sites?

Rachel DeAlto: Online dating sites are great and they do work for a lot of people but I think they are missing out on one key ingredient and that's chemistry. There is something that you can't explain when you meet somebody and when you have eye contact with someone. There is that attraction that you have for an individual that really helps build that foundation of the relationship. As opposed to online dating you are actually meeting in real life and having that physical chemistry with that person and then falling in love with them instead of the reverse which is how online dating is set up that you are almost falling in love with a profile and when you meet them in person you realize that this isn't a person that you are attracted to and it's someon that you can't actually build a relationship with.
