Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Lisa Zaccheo

Eric Michaels: What are you referring to when you say there’s a hidden national epidemic?

Lisa Zaccheo: When you look at so many of the things that people are struggling with in life, such as obesity, destructive habits, addictions, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, self or professional sabotage and yes even many diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Migraines, or Cancer they are, in my opinion, the surface symptoms of a much deeper problem.  That problem is the existence of the core belief “I’m not enough.” or “I’m not as good as.”   To me all those challenges or symptoms are like the branches and leaves of a tree, and what feeds those branches and leaves are the roots below the surface.  The root of most of our challenges as individuals, as a society, a nation and a world are seated in the fear of “not enough”.  “I’m not enough. If I’m not enough then I’m not capable. If I’m not capable I’ll never be enough. If I’m not enough then I’m not likeable. If I’m not likable, I may not be loveable. If I’m not lovable, I might be abandoned. If I’m abandoned I might be left alone. If I’m alone, I might not be safe. If I’m not safe, I might die, and so on and so forth. Not much of this dialog is conscious but make no mistake about it, it goes on below the surface all the time. If you break it down insecurity is the opposite of security. Security is safety – insecurity equals unsafe. Feeling unsafe causes stress and tension. It’s that inner dialog and those inner feelings of fear, which causes us to reach for coping mechanisms outside of ourselves.  So, we turn to food, we turn to cigarettes, drugs, gambling, destructive relationships. That constant underlying fear takes its toll on our immune systems, which leaves us vulnerable to disease. It’s all part and parcel of the same thing, the subconscious fear that we’re not good enough.

Eric Michaels:Where do you think that core belief comes from?

Lisa Zaccheo: I think it comes from a number of places.  I believe that as much as our genetics are passed forward so are thought forms, beliefs and feelings.  We are energetic beings. If we have a mother or father who is insecure, the emotional energy of that insecurity will be housed in all the cells of their body, including the sperm and egg that forms a fetus. When sperm and egg combine, not only genetic information gets transferred, but the emotional energy gets transferred as well.  So I think for many people it starts there, in the moment of conception.  The insecurity we’re feeling isn’t even ours – it’s an energetic foundation that came from our parents. And it continues from there. If you have a mother that is highly anxious about her pregnancy, anxious about her ability to be a good mother the baby is surrounded by that energy and spends 9 months soaking in her fear – not realizing that the fear it’s feeling is its mother’s insecurity, that it has nothing to do with the child itself.  Then we’re born and our parents, because it how they’ve been parented, put the bulk of their energy into all the things we do wrong instead of all the things we do right, we wind up with these internal scales that are imbalanced.  The “not good enough, not right” outweighs the “good enough,” so we’re left to conclude “I’m not good enough.”  Then we grow up a bit more, we go to school and we realize – “Oh my goodness – I’m different!! I’m not like everyone else.” And so we judge our differences to be wrong or bad instead of realizing that we’re intended to be different – that our differences are our gifts, our assets instead of faults.  We get teased, picked on or bullied and so it goes from there.  We believe we’re not good enough so we start to live down to those beliefs instead of up to our potential. We begin collecting evidence around “not good enough” and the belief gets bigger and stronger. And so it goes.  It’s obviously a bit more complex than that but you get the idea.

Eric Michaels: How can you as a hypnotist help people with this challenge that affects so many parts of their lives?

Lisa Zaccheo: The beauty of hypnosis is that it gives us access to the subconscious mind.  The subconscious mind is amazing at cutting through all the clutter and getting to the heart of the matter.  Time and time and time again, the subconscious mind leads the conscious mind to the fear of not good enough. Even those that say to themselves, “I don’t know what you’re talking about, I’m totally confident, I’ve got life by the horns.” and yet they’re work alcoholics or are in a lousy marriage.  Once light is shed on that fear or whatever happens to be contained in the client’s roots, the healing process begins.  The subconscious mind also houses our long-term memory so it knows exactly where the seed of our tree of challenges got planted. Whether the seed got planted in our history, in our soul history or our ancestral history, the subconscious mind has the power to travel wherever it needs to go to find the seed and heal that moment in time. It’s like a game of dominos. When you knock down the lead domino, the rest of them follow.  The subconscious mind is also our protective mind so it will never take a client anywhere that it doesn’t deem healthy or beneficial for the client.

Lisa Zaccheo also discusses and answers the following:

  • How is the process you use different than traditional therapy and different than how other hypnotist’s work?
  • What do you think is the most important thing for people to carry forward from this conversation?
  • Special Tip in Conclusion...

250sq_edrugstore.jpg

Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Melanie Barnum

Eric Michaels: Most people equate hypnosis with the comedic stage hypnotists.  So what is hypnosis, really?
Melanie Barnum: Hypnosis is a state of heightened suggestibility. It is a sometimes deeply relaxed state in which the hypnotist is able to introduce suggestions to the sub conscious part of the clients mind.  Thus, the hypnotist has the ability to "re-program" the mind to create more favorable habits, allowing for positive changes desired by the client. Hypnosis is also a state we enter into daily.  Take for example watching a suspenseful movie.  We've all been "sucked into" movie plots.  When we see the bad guy sneaking up behind the main character, many people talk to the screen! "Watch out!  He's behind you!" They can't hear us, but we feel like we are part of it.  Believe it or not, that, too, is hypnosis!  Or, when we are driving on the thruway and miss our normal exit we take everyday because we are "in a trance".  That is also a hypnotic state. Contrary to what some people believe, hypnosis is not scary!  While in a hypnosis state or during hypnotic suggestions you will never lose control.  A hypnotist can never make you do anything you don't want to do or wouldn't normally do. In all the years I have been a hypnotist I have never had anyone or even heard of anyone going so deeply into hypnosis that they weren't able to come out, and come out better off than when they began hypnosis! Hypnosis, although traditionally a non-traditional form of therapeutic help, is becoming more acceptable and more of a go-to method for people looking for assistance with all types of issues or concerns. Hypnosis essentially is a heightened state of awareness during which suggestions for positive change are given to the subconscious part of the mind.  It is a much easier, painless and drug free way to make changes or reach goals than many other traditional plans that are on the market today.  Knowing this, it seems to be an easy choice to make hypnosis a major part of any plan for everything from weight loss and smoking cessation to past life regression to increasing self confidence.

Eric Michaels: Okay, so now we know what hypnosis is, but does hypnosis really work for weight loss or smoking cessation and if so, how do you do it?
Melanie Barnum: Yes, it does!  Hypnosis works because it addresses the subconscious desires; those learned behaviors and cravings we all have.  Often, trying to use sheer will power alone will backfire.  Willpower causes the body, mind and spirit stress which makes it incredibly difficult to lose weight and keep it off without help.  Using willpower can help you lose that 5 pounds you need to lose to fit into a dress for the wedding next week, but it's not going to keep it off.  In fact, more often than not you will gain the 5 pounds back and more! I am a Certified Hypnotist with the National Guild of Hypnotists.  I regularly use hypnosis to help clients lose weight and stop smoking. The two, weight and smoking, are similar in that they both can be helped with hypnosis and that they can often be addressed by controlling cravings. That is where most of the similarities end. You can stop smoking. You can't stop eating. Both weight loss and smoking cessation have to be handled differently.  With smoking, the client will come in and I will take him gently into a deep state of relaxation, and then use what we refer to as hypnotic deepeners to get their subconscious mind to the surface.  After that, I will use negative suggestions as in "as you look at someone smoking you can actually see the smoke traveling through their mouth, turning their teeth brown, going down their throat, and you can see the black soot and tar left in their throat...as you watch them you feel that same thick, black coating on your throat...so much so that it makes your throat feel scratchy and swollen, like you have to cough."

Usually at this point the client will indeed cough.  After all of the negative suggestions, and I will continue, I switch to positive.. Always ending the session on a positive note is key to having the hypnosis feel like they are empowered and in control.  Positive suggestions for both smoking and weight loss tend to be very similar.  No voodoo, no tricks, just good old fashioned health and vanity!  "You feel clearer and more in control of your body and mind, you look fantastic, your skin is now glowing a beautiful healthy color," etc.

For weight loss, there are many ways to go including negative to positive.  You can focus on one specific food they have an issue with.  For instance, they eat too many bagels.  "As you look at the bagel, browned perfectly, with a soft center you realize that the center is starting to move.  There are maggots drilling holes and you can see them devouring the tan outside of the bagel.  Those poppy seeds on the bagel are beginning to change....they have legs now!  They are crawling and attacking the bagel. Ooh, look, they are planting their eggs inside so all of their spider babies can hatch.  Won't that be great?  If you bite into the maggot and spider infested bagel the babies will be born into your nice warm stomach!" etc, etc.

Then, of course, stress all of the benefits to losing extra, no longer useful weight, or quitting smoking... By making healthy choices they will create and possess a beautiful body, mind and spirit.  Also, I will use everyday references such as being able to walk up the stairs without losing their breath or going on vacation and feeling comfortable with a bathing suit on.  Imagine being able to shop for clothes at the stores in the mall without having to worry whether you'll be able to fit into them!

I had one client who to this day can no longer eat her favorite candy; Snickers bars!  She actually turns her head in the other direction as she passes them in the grocery store!  Initially, she had no idea why.  Now, she knows, and even the knowing doesn't stop her from her Snickers avoidance!

Eric Michaels: Wow, that's a pretty good story!  I know it would be hard for me to give up my favorite candy bar!  So, how long does it usually take for hypnosis to actually work and produce results?
Melanie Barnum: That's a great question, and one I get asked quite often!  I usually allow for an hour for each session.  But, that will include, not only the hypnotism portion, it also includes getting to know the client and what their needs are.  The actual hypnotism may be as little as 5 minutes or it could take the full hour.  When facilitating regression therapy I usually take more time.  First I relax the client, and then deepen their hypnotic state before regressing them back, whether doing current life or past life regression.

The number of actual hypnosis sessions needed depends upon each individual client.  Quite often, only one is necessary for the client to experience results.  As a general rule of thumb I usually let the client know that one session will begin the process.  If they are coming for weight loss we also look at "recharging" their hypnotic batteries periodically.  Just imagine your body like a car.  Whether you take meticulous care of your car's appearance or performance or not, there are certain things you have to do to maintain it such as filling it with gas, getting a periodic oil change and changing the spark plugs.  It's the same with weight loss hypnosis.  Every once in a while you need a jump start to recharge your weight loss drive.

Eric Michaels: Why use hypnosis instead of a different type of weight loss or stop smoking aid?
Melanie Barnum: Most weight loss and stop smoking aids sold in stores either come in the form of drugs, shakes or patches.  While these may work and accomplish what you are hoping they also contain different chemicals which you are then ingesting into your body.  These chemicals can change your metabolism, affect your mood, and even cause serious problems as well as posing health risks.  They can also create the yo-yo diet effect.  This means you may very well lose weight or even quit smoking.  But, more often than not, when you stop taking these drugs you will gain back what you've lost and then some!

Having said that, there is no reason hypnosis can not be combined with other modalities.  For instance, for someone going to weekly meetings at weight watchers we can tailor their hypnotism session to include references so they can achieve their weight watchers goals easier, allowing them to be a part of a weight loss group and use hypnotic suggestion to increase their ability to create a whole new life for themselves.  It doesn't have to be an either/or situation.  It can actually be a great and lasting partnership.

Luckily for everyone, we are evolving and shifting as a whole into a more aware society.  We are becoming awakened to the idea of mind, body and spirit being connected in ways we never imagined before.  This doesn't just pertain to the metaphysical aspect; it also helps on the hypnosis front.  Hypnotism is a natural remedy for many ailments, not limited to weight loss or smoking. Because of our increased interest we are looking for these more natural aids which is helping to bring hypnosis to many more communities that were previously unaware hypnosis was even an option.

As someone who works with hypnosis as well as intuition and energy, I am able to bring this  together to create a lasting change.  By helping them tap into themselves I can open them up to a whole new world; something that is better for them and that can help them attain whatever they want in life, that can help them make lasting changes for the better.

That to me, is a far greater proposition than taking a pill which not only affects their chemical balance, but has very short term, non lasting results.

Eric Michaels: So hypnosis really does change lives!  That's amazing!  Do you have to go into a hypnotist's office in order to be hypnotized and have it work?  Does it work in groups? Is it possible to practice self hypnosis? Or even hypnosis over the phone?
Melanie Barnum: I'm glad you asked!  Hypnosis works really well one on one, in a professional office.  However, with a good hypnotist, it can work anywhere!  The average success rate for large weight loss groups, and I'm talking about really large audiences, is upwards of about 40%.  Now, having said that, you have to remember what I said earlier.  We need a bit of a recharge on occasion!  It is also more difficult for us to relax when we are with 100 of our closest friends!  Often we are more focused on the person up on the stage than we are on ourselves.  Smaller groups generally have a higher success rate, plus if you get hypnotized with someone you know they can become your partner in achieving your goals which always helps!

Self hypnosis is a great way to get you started with hypnosis and to reinforce hypnotic suggestions!  By simply repeating something over and over with the belief and intent that it will become an automatic part of your subconscious you are enabling yourself to achieve your goal.  When I teach clients how to use self hypnosis I also teach them how to visualize what they want.  They are able to create symbolic representations of what they want or what they want to be rid of in their lives which helps give them a focus point. What the mind believes, the body will achieve!

Tele classes are a great way to utilize hypnotism.  Many people are too embarrassed or too busy to make a one on one appointment with a hypnotist.  However, given the option, they are very willing to pick up the phone, anonymously, and dial in to their own personal hypnotic suggestions!  I regularly do hypnosis teleclasses, which work well because clients are able to actually call in anytime during the week and get their session!  This way they are able to make the call and lie down or even tape the session to use later when they are somewhere they can relax and focus on the voice!  I offer weight loss hypnosis over the phone, and as I said, there are many people who would rather keep their weight loss endeavors private so it works out much better for them.  It is also a cheap alternative to a one on one in office session!  It also works well for people who can't physically come to the office, whether due to disabilities or geographical location.

All in all, hypnosis is a great, natural way to achieve whatever goals you have.  What the mind believes, the body can achieve!

Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Debbie Lane

Eric Michaels: Why is it that people who make and act upon important decisions all day, every day can’t seem to follow through with stop smoking?
Debbie Lane: Thinking in the conscious (or rational) mind is how we learn a new skill or attack a new challenge. Once a task becomes routine we go into “the zone”, the area known as the subconscious mind.  So, when we are making logical, conscious decisions we are applying that part of the mind.  We know at a rational level that smoking is not good for us and we are well aware of all the harm that cigarettes cause our bodies.  The problem is, it has become a habit and even to many smokers a “friend”.  They light up without a thought; turn to their “friend” in times of stress, loneliness or some other emotional need.  Every behavior we have benefits us in some way or we wouldn’t exhibit it.  The habit of smoking is often a filler of time or consolation.  I have had many clients who are mourning the loss of that “friend”.

Eric Michaels: Smoking is a friend that has always been there for many smokers, how do they get over the grief?
Debbie Lane: Once again, at a logical level we understand that a friend isn’t a very good friend that empties our wallets, causes us harm and lies to us on a regular basis.  What we do in hypnosis is allow the subconscious mind to understand that.  As that part of the mind is programmed to protect us, once that is truly understood, it immediately begins the process of stopping that relationship. The subconscious mind has an amazing ability to help a smoker create new and healthier ways of filling the needs that they once believed smoking did.

I encourage the client to create new habits and beliefs regarding their healthy habits while in trance. We can review each of the reasons that the individual was attached to smoking and ask the internal genius, care giver (whatever title is appropriate) for a better way to meet that need.  We also allow issues of self image and self esteem to be improved.  It no longer is necessary have the identity of a smoker.  In fact, a stronger, more powerful self image is created.

Eric Michaels: How do you make sure the cravings go away?
Debbie Lane: Many of what the smokers previously believed were cravings were actually the body detoxifying.  So, while the body mind connection can cause those sensations to lessen, any remaining sensations are redefined in the thought process as feelings of self empowerment.  It is also explained that a thought, any thought is one of thousands of inputs in any given moment.  So, a thought of a cigarette is not the same as a need or a craving.  A thought grows as it is given attention.  Instead of fighting the thought of a cigarette, take three deep breathes and become aware of the body for a moment.  Breathing deeply, focus on the improved sensations of the breath as it enters the body. Exhale any distractions. Breathe in the understanding of being stronger than Big Tobacco. Exhale any person, situation or thing that might want to take your power away.  Breathe in the moment, exhale and relax.

Eric Michaels: What makes your program so effective and long lasting?
Debbie Lane: I approach smoke cessation as an opportunity for the individual to become stronger in more ways than one.  This is about making a personal choice to breathe easier, to feel self empowered and appreciate themselves.  While I have an audio that is effective for stop smoking and many have used it, when I work with an individual, I record our session and give them that to use as well.  It is a great way to reinforce what they accomplished in session.

Most of my clients report better sleep after a hypnosis session with me.  So, the body heals and recovers while they sleep at night.  The recording often helps to continue the process of better sleeping as well.

I also have hand outs that my clients read and sign.  These have practical suggestions and easy follow up activities to really make this a commitment.  Now, when I say easy, I really mean easy.  Things such as taking three deep breathes every time you get into the car as a reminder of your desire to be focused and relaxed.  It doesn’t get much easier than that!

I work with clients around the world, using Skype.  They have the same fabulous and long lasting results as those who come to my office and they do it in the comfort of their own home!

Eric Michaels: What if you are strong willed or strong minded, will this program still work?
Debbie Lane: It is a common fallacy that hypnosis is for the weak minded. Actually, quite the opposite is true.  The client is in control the whole time.  A good strong mind is well equipped to problem solve and create new habits.  I have been tickled many times by a client who tells me they can’t go into trance.  They have even been told by another hypnotist that they can’t go into trance!  We all experience trance on a daily basis; we just don’t call it that.  But, if you have ever been to sleep in your life, then you have been through the brainwaves identified as trance. Just recently I worked with a woman who had been told she couldn’t go into trance. Well, obviously there was no rapport between her and the hypnotist who told her that.  She went into trance so fast it was amazing.  What’s more, she gave up a two pack a day habit!  She has a fabulous mind, and now she is using it for her benefit.

Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Dr. Randy Gilchrist

Eric Michaels: As a psychologist, why do you think we have such an extreme weight problem in today's society?
Dr. Gilchrist: 2 Main Reasons:  #1 Our society conditions us to associate food with things besides weight loss: entertainment, stress relief, boredom relief, etc., and offers many high fat, high sugar, high carb foods well beyond what our bodies need.  In short, we eat from external cues instead of internal cues because our bodies crave nutrition, and we eat excessively for emotional reasons vs. because our bodies need replenishment. #2 We live a more sedentary lifestyle and have careers where we sit more.  Eating more and moving less = the weight problem we have today where 2/3 of people are over weight and 1/3 are actually obese.

Eric Michaels: What is clinical hypnosis and how can it be used for weight loss?
Dr. Gilchrist: Clinical hypnosis is a psychotherapy technique to promote powerful change through bypassing our conscious resistance to change.  The subject simply closes their eyes, relaxes, and focuses on the creative and disarming direction and suggestions given by the hypnotist to change and improve (such as to eat less and exercise more). These suggestions are then much easier to accept and embrace because the subject’s conscious resistance to change is much lower since they are in a more relaxed, focused state. As the subject embraces the suggestions to change in their mind, these improvements eventually translate over to improved behavioral/lifestyle habits, and positive lifestyle changes follow.  In other words, the person eventually eats less, moves, more, loses the weight, and keeps it off.

Eric Michaels: What are the main myths out there about hypnosis and how would you answer them?
Dr. Gilchrist: Myth 1:  I will get stuck in hypnosis.  Reality:  you can break out of hypnosis whenever you wish to open your eyes and reject the suggestions. Myth 2:  I’m too strong willed to be hypnotized.  Reality:  you can benefit from hypnosis by simply relaxing, focusing, and going with the suggestions in the session.  Since the goal to lose weight is something you want, and the fact that you as the subject co-creates the session in your mind, the problem of resistance or “being strong willed” usually isn’t a problem.

Eric Michaels: Please tell us your own story of losing 70 pounds through hypnosis.
Dr. Gilchrist: My journey into the world of hypnosis and weight loss began as a doctoral student in clinical psychology in San Diego.  Between 1996-2001, I gained an embarrassing 70 pounds—going from 203 pounds in 1996 to 273 pounds in 2001 (I’m 6 foot 5 inches tall).  To deal with the stress and anxiety of graduate school, I ate and ate and ate—Home Town Buffet, Godfather’s Pizza buffet, Taco Bell, etc., etc.  I didn’t know what to do.  I had never managed any dieting success during all of these years, even though I had tried everything I could think of.  I felt frustrated, embarrassed, and hopeless.

Fortunately, at my lowest point in March 2001, I signed up to learn clinical hypnosis at a 6-day seminar by Dr. Michael Yapko, the world-renown expert of therapist-level clinical hypnosis training.  During the last segment of the final day of training, a fellow hypnosis student hypnotized me to lose weight upon my request.  I honestly didn’t think much of the novice hypnosis session I received at the time.  However, I greatly underestimated the power of hypnosis.

About 2 weeks after my hypnosis session, I was trying on a new shirt at Old Navy and said to myself—“I’m too fat to wear this”.  Right then, something seemed to “click” in my brain. I suddenly felt motivated to eat less, eat better, and exercise more.  In other words, I was finally ready to commit to a full-blown, permanent weight loss lifestyle.  Although I was surprised and a little confused by this development, I embraced it and ran with it.  The rest is history—I lost 1-2 pounds a week for 12 months until I lost a full 73 pounds—going from a high of 273 down to a low of 200 pounds.  I’ve stayed between 205-215 pounds ever since to this day (my ideal weight range).

Since my 2001 training, I’ve also been helping my live, face-to-face psychotherapy clients slim down through the power of hypnosis in my private practice.  Now, after years of preparation, training, and experience, I’ve decided to share my weight loss tools with as many people as possible, leading me to the eventual creation of this program—The Weight Loss Mindset™.

Eric Michaels: Besides doing hypnosis for weight loss in your private practice office, you also have a self-help version of your hypnosis for weight loss called The Weight Loss Mindset.  Please tell us about that.

Dr. Gilchrist: The Weight Loss Mindset is a self-help version of the same clinical hypnosis for weight loss sessions I offer in my private  ask for practice.  It’s a collection of 8 complementary 30-minute hypnosis audio sessions addressing all of the main subjects people in my private practice ask for assistance with: eating less, eating better, exercising more, overcoming junk food, etc. Customers of my program simply listen to a session when they can—such as just before they go to sleep.  They simply push play on their MP3 or CD player, close their eyes, relax, and focus.  Then, the suggestions to change and improve their weight will follow.  To learn more, simply go to TheWeightLossMindset.com to learn more.  On my site, you’ll see a simple 60-second introductory video that will introduce the program, as well as show my own embarrassing before and after photo, along with one of my testimonial subjects—a 58 year old lady who lost and kept off 50 pounds in 5 months.
