Abbreviated Transcript of Interview with Dr. Roberta Temes

Eric Michaels: Can I get stuck in a trance?
Dr. Roberta: Impossible. You will come back to regular after several minutes of quiet. You will be bored and open your eyes and be finished with hypnosis. A professional hypnotist takes you out of hypnosis easily and simply, using just a few words.

Eric Michaels: What if I am very strong-minded?
Dr. Roberta: The more strong-minded you are, the more likely you will accomplish your goal. You and the hypnotist are on the same team. You are allies, not adversaries. You both are striving for the same result.

Eric Michaels: Will I quack like a duck? Reveal all my secrets?
Dr. Roberta: Yes, you might if you go to a stage hypnotist whose job is to entertain an audience. If you go to a clinical (medical) hypnotist whose job is to help you, you will be told to do things that you want to do in order to achieve your goal. During hypnosis the hypnotist will give you instructions – you do not speak.

Eric Michaels: Are volunteers at hypnosis stage events faking it?
Dr. Roberta: No, they are truly hypnotized. But, they are the 15% of the population who are extremely hypnotizable. That’s why the stage hypnotist will ask some volunteers to return to their seats – they are not that hypnotizable, as evidenced by certain behaviors they display when first up on stage.

Eric Michaels: What are the side effects to hypnosis?
Dr. Roberta: Some people, not all, feel extremely mellow afterward and for an hour or so cannot/ should not drive or do a competitive activity. Most people will fall asleep easily that night and enjoy a deep replenishing sleep.
