Psychological tips to help you be more successful with weight loss

Lavinia Rodriguez, Ph.D. joined the show. She is a clinical psychologist and expert on food and fitness problems including eating disorders. She is also the author of Mind Over Fat Matters: Conquering Psychological Barriers to Weight Management. She discusses the state of our country and its diet, why most diets fail and a whole lot more you must hear.

Dr. Lavinia Rodriguez is a clinical psychologist with over 30 years experience working with people with eating and weight problems. She is the author of Mind Over Fat Matters: Conquering Psychological Barriers to Weight Management. Dr. Rodriguez is known for her inspiring workshops and for her skill in helping people to gain natural control of food and their lives.

Eric Michaels: What is the state of dieting in our country today?
Dr. Lavinia: Where we are at today is that we are still over 64% of us are over weight or obese. Also we happen to be in the country that puts out more dieting information and dieting products than any other country in the world yet 90% of dieting attempts fail, so there is something there that just doesn't compute.
Eric Michaels: Why do most diets fail?
Dr. Lavinia: Most diets fail first of all because most of the diets people go on are bad diets and these diets tend to be very rigid and that's often times have diets with quirky names and will either say these are the things you can eat and this is what you can't eat - so they may be rigid in terms of calorie in take, rigid in terms of what you can and can't eat...
Eric Michaels: In your book you talk about a new concept that you call Psychological Deprivation; if you would define Psychological Deprivation for us?
Dr. Lavinia: Psychological Deprivation is a term that I created in working with eating disorders because it really described a state in your mind that leads to a loss of control in eating. Let me give you a quick example and this is probably the best way to define it - First of all think of the food that you least like and it may be a food that you really really can't stand and often times when I ask this question people would say something like spinach, snails or some kind of vegetable and then I would say now imagine for a second that I have total power over you and I am going to say to you from now on you may never eat that food again, how do you feel? The typical answer is no problem...
